Sutter Court: Clerk Revised Salary

On March 24, 2025, the Sutter Governing Board met with the Court to discuss their revised salary schedule for court clerks. Effective no later than the last pay period of April, everyone will be reclassified as a step-down (ex: Court Clerk III Step 3 would be Court Clerk III Step 2) but receive the same pay as they do now. This will allow an additional step at the end of each clerk level, giving people at the higher end of steps an opportunity for financial growth, especially those currently in longevity steps. To make better sense of this, the Step I clerk level will be eliminated. So those in the new Step 1 would receive Step 2's current rate, those in the new Step 2 would receive Step 3's current rate, and so on. Everyone will essentially be bumped up 5%, so the new Step 8 salary would be 5% higher than before.

Current and future Clerk I Step 1 will automatically receive the current Step 2 salary rate (20.99) effective at the end of April but still be classified as Step I. The purpose of this is to remain competitive in the job market and to help with recruiting and retention of new employees. All others would receive their increase at their annual anniversary date.

Anniversary dates will not change. Staff will keep the time they have in their old step and apply it to their new (rolled back) step. Ex: if you were a Step 7 and had been there for 4 years, you would take those 4 years to Step 6 and could expect to move to Step 7 by the next anniversary date. A person's step within a class will not impact someone's ability to promote. Requirements for promotion are based on time in class and not time at any certain step.
