On February 24, 2025, UPE met with the Merced County Department Registrar of Voters to discuss important changes to the classification specifications for Election Specialist II and updates to terminology within the department. One key change is that "Voting Assistance Centers" will now be referred to simply as "Vote Centers."
Another significant update is the change in qualification requirements for Election Specialist II. Previously, candidates were required to have two years of experience as an Election Specialist I. With the new changes, only one year of experience is required, making it easier for employees to advance within the department. UPE believes this adjustment is feasible and that Election Specialist I employees will now have a clearer path to promotion.
To support this transition, the department has committed to providing additional training, including dedicated team training sessions on Thursdays. This training will ensure that employees moving into the Election Specialist II role have the necessary resources and guidance for a smooth transition.
UPE believes this change is a fantastic opportunity for Election Specialist I employees, as it provides more room for career growth, better financial benefits, and a clearer pathway to advancement. We will continue to work to ensure our members have the tools and support they need to succeed.
UPE would like to thank Merced County Unit 3 Governing Board Members Carmelita Rodriguez for her advocacy and participation.
