UPE met with BHRS in Merced on Monday, September 30, 2024, to continue discussions about the proposed changes to the Alternative Work Schedule (AWS) policies. Members will now be allowed to choose between multiple AWS options: the 8/80 schedule, which consists of four 10-hour workdays each week, and the 9/80 schedule, which includes four 9-hour shifts one week and four 9-hour shifts plus one 8-hour shift the following week.
During the meeting, UPE raised concerns about the eligibility requirements for AWS, particularly when members are under a Corrective Action Plan (CAP) for disciplinary action or facing backlogs/late reports. We emphasized the need for clear guidelines on the number of backlog/late reports that would disqualify someone from AWS, being assured by the county that only excessive amounts would result in ineligibility. The department assured UPE that if AWS is denied or removed due to being on a CAP, members can reapply once the CAP is completed, and business needs allow. UPE requested clearer definitions of what disciplinary actions affect AWS eligibility, the County agreed to add link and refer to the policy section where definitions are found.
The implementation of AWS is expected to provide members with more work-life balance and flexibility. While this policy currently applies to BHRS members, we encourage members from other departments to reach out so UPE can support your needs as well. The process for implementation is expected to begin in October.
UPE would like to thank Lisa Sykes and Carmelita Rodriguez, UPE Merced County Unit 3 Governing Board, for their advocacy and participation.
